Overview & Inclusions: The Sleep Well-Being Packages

What can I expect to happen during my in-home visit?

During your in-home visit, The Baby Calmer will work with you to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Observe your baby, toddler or young child’s sleep behaviour, along with your parental interactions, in the context of your home environment. These observations will help The Baby Calmer to best advise and support you in responding to your child’s individual sleep issues.
  • Investigate and determine the physical, emotional and social factors that may be preventing your baby, toddler or young child from sleeping well.
  • Rely on sound research and current insights into infant and early years development to determine the best possible approaches and strategies what will help your baby, toddler or young child to sleep well.
  • Place a strong focus on supporting, fostering and preserving the attachment process and emotional bond between you and your baby, toddler, or young child.  The Baby Calmer supports the Australian Infant Mental Health Association’s position that controlled crying is not consistent with what infants, toddlers and young children need for their optimal psychological health and development.  As such, you can be assured that The Baby Calmer will not use any forms of controlled crying or ignoring strategies when working with you and your children.
  • Determine your baby, toddler or young child’s age appropriate sleep requirements, along with the most developmentally appropriate, emotion focussed approaches and gentle techniques, that will help you to respond to your baby, toddler or young child’s individual sleep issues.
  • Assist you to commence implementing The Baby Calmer’s recommended developmentally appropriate, emotion focussed approaches and gentle techniques.
  • Provide you with a parenting support manual and individualised sleep plan for you to refer to, post your in-home visit.
  • Introduce you to a range of parenting resources available for purchase.
As your "Sleep Well-Being" Consultation progresses (and giving consideration to the time-frame of the package purchased and the goals and expectations you have for your in-home visit), The Baby Calmer will also aim to assist you to:
  • Develop an awareness of and establish age appropriate sleep requirements for your baby, toddler or young child.
  • Better understand your baby, toddler or young child’s sleep cycles and sleep states, so that you can support them more effectively on a day-to-day basis.
  • Facilitate a predictable sleep pattern for your baby, toddler or young child.
  • Understand the impact of sleep deprivation on your baby, toddler or young child’s development.
  • Address the specific sleep and settling issues you currently have with your little one.
  • Identify your baby, toddler or young child’s tired signs.
  • Combat under-stimulation, and avoid overstimulating your baby, toddler or young child in the lead up to sleep time.
  • Understand how some sleep aids and interventions can be an important resource for your baby, and also why some sleep aids and interventions are not always helpful to your sleepless baby, toddler or young child.
  • Explore the short and long-term benefits and drawbacks of a range of sleep associations, and implement those that best suit your baby, toddler or young child’s current developmental needs.
  • Learn how to play and interact with your baby, toddler or young child in a way that helps to induce better sleep.
  • Understand why in most cases, the notion that all babies, toddlers and young children can sleep ‘through the night’ is essentially a myth.
  • Be aware of circumstances where feeding, rocking, shusshing and patting to sleep will support and resource your baby in your current sleep context, but also, how to identify when they may be distracting to your baby, or may only solve the sleep problem temporarily.  You will learn a series of therapeutic support and resourcing frameworks to try that won't be distracting to your baby, but still maximise the continuous proximal resourcing and support philosophies promoted by The Baby Calmer and needed by your baby!
  • Learn why the terms ‘self-settle’ and ‘self-soothe’ are potentially misleading, and why parent dependant sleep support and approaches hold the keys to helping your baby, toddler or young child learn to master this skill.
  • Develop an awareness of the physiological and psychological connection between emotional stress, physical tension, fears and early trauma, and your baby, toddler or young child’s sleep issues.
  • Learn how to identfiy the pretexts where your baby, toddler or young child is inviting you to help them offload stores of unreleased / pent-up emotions, tensions, fears and early trauma, which can prevent them from falling or staying asleep.
  • Learn the skill of empathic listening so that you can reassuringly and attentively listen to your baby, toddler or young child’s emotional expression and release of those stored / pent-up emotions, feelings, tensions and fears, either recent or from the past.
  • Understand how every single one of your baby, toddler or young child’s cries are communicating important emotional and developmental needs, and why it is essential to respond to every cry immediately.
  • Learn how to respond to every cry (crying is NEVER timed or ignored when working with The Baby Calmer)  in a way that ensures your little one's physical comfort and emotional safety, whilst also building a more deeply connected and trusting relationship with your baby, toddler or young child.
  • Appreciate the long-term benefits of being physically present and emotionally available when helping crying babies, toddler and young children fall asleep.
  • Understand why ‘controlled crying’ and any other ‘sleep training’ methods that involve ignoring your little one are damaging to your baby, toddler or young child’s physiological, psychological, social and emotional development.
  • Create gentle, responsive, soothing and sleep inducing sleep time rituals that will help your baby, toddler or young child feel physically calmer and more emotionally connected to you, before entering sleep.
  • Understand the importance of massage for your baby, toddler or young child’s overall physical and psychological development.

At the conclusion of your in-home visit, further support is offered in the form of unlimted follow-up emails.  The period of unlimited email follow-up support varies depending on which "Sleep Well-Being' package is purchased.
